FAQ
Answers to what we get asked most, from UKARA and your first game to clocking in, claiming a listing and plans.

01New to airsoft
Do I need my own kit for a first game?
No. Nearly every site hires out a gun, a mask and overalls. Bring boots, clothes you do not mind ruining, water and ID. Check the site's own page for what it hires and what it costs. Read the first game guide.
Does it hurt?
It stings, more up close and on bare skin. Long sleeves, gloves and a lower face mask take most of the sting out.
How do I find a site near me?
Use the site finder. Each listing shows where the site is, its game days, its prices, its rules and how to book. You book with the site itself, on its own booking page or by phone or email. Find a site.
How old do I need to be?
You must be 18 to make a player profile on Mexar, and 18 to buy an imitation firearm in the UK. Sites set their own age to play, and many take younger players with an adult.
02UK law and power limits
Is airsoft legal in the UK?
Yes. Airsoft guns are legal to own and use at a site. Selling, importing or making realistic imitation firearms is restricted, which is why shops ask for UKARA, and carrying one in public without a good reason can get you arrested. Keep it in a bag on the way to a game.
What is UKARA?
The UK Airsoft Retailers Association runs the database shops use to check you are a skirmisher. You register through a UKARA site once you are 18 or over and have played three games there over at least two months, the third one 56 days or more after the first.
Can I buy an airsoft gun without UKARA?
If you are 18 or over you can buy a two-tone gun, one that is mostly a bright colour so it does not look real. A realistic one needs a defence such as UKARA.
What is the legal power limit in the UK?
1.3 J for a gun that can fire full auto and 2.5 J for any other airsoft gun. Above those it is no longer an airsoft gun in law. Sites usually set lower limits than that. Check your gun on the calculators.
What do sites usually allow?
Many UK sites allow about 350 fps on a 0.20g BB (1.14 J) for rifles and pistols, and more for semi-auto DMRs and bolt-action snipers with a minimum engagement distance. Every site is different, so read its rules.
What is a MED?
Minimum engagement distance: the closest you may shoot at someone with a more powerful gun such as a DMR or sniper. Inside it you switch to a sidearm or ask them to surrender, if the site allows it.
What is a chrono?
A chronograph measures how fast your BB leaves the barrel. Sites chrono every gun before play, usually on a 0.20g BB, and a gun over the limit does not play.
Why do people talk in joules instead of FPS?
FPS changes with BB weight, but energy does not. A gun firing 350 fps on 0.20g fires slower on a 0.30g BB with about the same energy, so joules is the fair figure.
03Players
Is Mexar free for players?
Yes. Your player profile, clocking in at game days and every rank up to level 50 are free, for good. VIP and VIP Pro are optional and add more room for photos, guns and gear, extra looks for your profile and trackers such as who left you a heart. See what each plan adds.
How do I make a player profile?
Join with your email, a password and a few details, all on one page. Your date of birth is only used to check you are 18 or over and is never shown to anybody. Join free.
Are the discount codes free to use?
Yes. Press Show code on a site's or service's profile and the code appears in the same place, with an i for its terms. You do not need to sign in or give an email. Use the code when you book with that business. If there is no code yet, your press is counted, so the business can see players want one.
How do reviews work?
Anyone can leave a star rating and a review on a site, shop or service profile, with up to four photos. Nothing goes up until you press the link we email you, which works once, and then a person at Mexar reads it before it is shown. Photos are redrawn so no location or camera data is left in them. The stars on a profile combine reviews left on Mexar with the site's Google and Tripadvisor ratings, weighted by how many reviews each has.
How do teams work?
Any player can start a team or join one. A free team holds up to 5 players, counting open invites. Team Pro, bought by the captain, removes that limit and adds a cover, a background, a border and a gallery of up to 30 photos on the team page. The captain or a Major can take a player out. Closing a whole team is done by support, so nobody loses a team to one click: use the support form and say which team. See the teams.
Can I buy or sell gear on Mexar?
No. Mexar lists sites, shops and suppliers, services and game days. There is no marketplace and no buying or selling between players here.
How do I report a player or something I have seen?
Press the small Report flag on the profile, team page or comment, pick a reason and send it. For a review, a photo or anything else, open a support ticket under Report a player or content. Open a ticket.
04Clock-in and ranks
How does clock-in work?
Open Clock in on your phone when you get to the field. The radar finds the sites within 3 km, and your phone's location is read for about 20 seconds and checked against that site's own pin and catch circle. If it all lines up, you are clocked in and the XP lands. Open Clock in.
When can I clock in?
When you are at the field to play, between 06:00 and 21:00 site time, once a day per site. You need a player profile and must be 18 or over, and the site's location must be one we have checked. The XP is the same whichever plan you are on.
Why was my clock-in refused?
The radar tells you in words. The usual reasons are a rough location (worse than ±150 m, so move into the open or switch on precise location), being outside the site's circle, having already clocked in there today, or a clock-in somewhere else earlier that day that nobody could have travelled from at 200 km/h. A VPN or a location app also counts against you, so switch them off and use mobile data or the site's wifi.
It says my clock-in has gone to the team to check. What now?
Nothing. When we cannot confirm a clock-in straight away, a person looks at it. Once it is confirmed it counts like any other clock-in, XP included.
What if there is no signal at the field?
Open Clock in while you still have signal, on the way or in the car park. Your phone keeps a check-in pass for each nearby site for 12 hours, so you can clock in with no signal and it is sent the moment you are back online. A clock-in older than 12 hours is thrown away.
I am at the field but it says I am too far away.
The pin may be in the wrong place. Send us where you are from the radar, and if we move the pin to it you get 100 XP. Adding a site we are missing is 150.
How do I earn XP?
Mostly by playing: 100 XP for each game day you clock in at, 150 for a big event or op day, 50 more the first time you play a new site, and 100 for each month in a row you play. Photos, builds, comments, hearts, likes and the daily and weekly tasks add a little more, but never more than half of that month's game-day XP. A friend who signs up through your share link earns you XP when they join and when they clock in, for up to 5 friends a month. See every rank and XP rule.
How many ranks are there?
There are 50 levels, with General at the top. It takes 13,720 XP, which is about three and a half years for someone who plays every two weeks. Every rank and its photo effect is free.
05Sites and owners
How does a business get on Mexar?
We build each listing from the business's own website and social pages: its name, address, game days, prices and photos. The listing goes live, and then the owner claims it to run it. Being listed is free.
How do I claim my listing?
Press the Unclaimed badge on your profile and fill in the short form. We match the email address you give against the website and social pages on your listing, then email a claim link to that address. The link only works for that address, works once and lasts 60 days. That address becomes your sign-in. Read the guide for sites.
My email is not on my website. Can I still claim?
Use an address that appears on your website or social pages if you can, as that is how we match you. If you cannot, open a support ticket under Site or shop listing and tell us who you are. Open a listing ticket.
Can I change what my listing says?
Yes. Once it is claimed you edit your own details, game days, prices, rules and photos from your account. A few parts are set by Mexar: the link name, the map pin, the clock-in circle, the review scores and the plan. Ask us on a support ticket to change those.
Do players book through Mexar?
No. The Book button on your profile goes to your own booking page, and players can call or email you from the buttons beside it. Mexar takes no bookings and no payment for games.
What do Tier 1 and Tier 2 add?
Free puts you in the directory. Tier 1 gives you a full profile, and Tier 2 puts you at the top of the directory. The pricing page lists every line each tier adds. Compare the business plans.
06Plans and payments
What do the paid plans cost?
Players: VIP is £3.99 a month or £35.91 a year, VIP Pro is £6.99 a month or £62.91 a year. Teams: Team Pro is £5.99 a month or £53.91 a year, paid once for the whole team. Businesses: Tier 1 is £19.99 a month or £179.91 a year, Tier 2 is £39.99 a month or £359.91 a year. Every price is set in pounds with tax included. Outside the UK, the checkout may show it in your local currency. Compare the plans.
How much do I save by paying yearly?
A year costs less than twelve months. VIP saves £11.97 (25%), VIP Pro saves £20.97 (25%), Team Pro saves £17.97 (25%), Tier 1 saves £59.97 (25%) and Tier 2 saves £119.97 (25%).
Can I cancel?
Yes, any time. Open Plan and billing in your account settings and cancel there. You keep the plan to the end of what you have paid for, nothing more is charged, and you can take the cancel back before then. Open Plan and billing.
Can I move up a plan or switch to yearly?
Yes. Plan and billing shows Upgrade on every plan above yours and a button to switch between monthly and yearly. It tells you the price first and asks you to confirm before anything changes.
What happens when a paid plan ends or a payment fails?
Nothing is deleted. The profile, team or listing shows its Free version, and anything over the Free limits is hidden and kept for 6 months. Pay again in that time and it all shows again, just as it was.
Who can buy Team Pro?
The team's captain. It covers the whole team, so nobody else in it pays.
Who can buy a business plan?
Anybody who runs the listing on Mexar: the owner, or a member of staff the owner has added. If you run more than one listing, the checkout asks which one the plan is for.
Is there VAT or tax?
Every price includes tax, so the price you see is the price you pay. Stripe works out the VAT, GST or sales tax within it and pays it to the tax authority, as our terms say. Read the terms.
How do I pay, and where are my invoices?
Plans on the website are sold through Link (Onelink), Stripe's checkout service, which is the seller of record. Link takes the payment, sends your receipts and handles payment questions and refunds, and your statement shows LINK.COM*. Prices are set in pounds, and the checkout may show your local currency. Plan and billing lists every payment you have made, each with its invoice to view or download as a PDF, and Change card updates the card on file.
Does a plan change my rank?
No. XP and ranks come from clocking in at game days, the same on every plan. A paid plan adds room, looks and trackers to your profile, never XP.
07Account and privacy
Who can see my date of birth?
Nobody. It is only used to check you are 18 or over, and it is never shown on your profile or anywhere else.
What does clock-in keep about where I was?
Each clock-in keeps the exact reading for 30 days, so a site or Mexar can check or void it. After that the exact spot is deleted and only the distance from the site's pin is kept.
Do my photos give away where I live?
No. Every photo you upload is redrawn as a fresh image before it is kept, which drops its location and camera data, and it is checked before it goes up.
Can I download my data?
Yes. Press Request my data in your account settings and we email your account, profile, kit, clock-ins, teams, tickets and the rest to your sign-in email as files in one ZIP, within 1 month. Open account settings.
How do I delete my account?
Press Delete my account in your account settings, type DELETE and put in your password if you have one. The account and your data are deleted straight away and we email you to say so. It removes your player profile, photos, kit, clock-ins, XP and team places, and it cannot be undone.
Where is the full privacy notice?
On the privacy page. It says what we hold, why, how long we keep it and your rights. Read the privacy notice.
